Ryan Christie has confessed that he aspires to be just like”class act” Kevin De Bruyne after the Belgium midfielder dominated the 4-0 win over Scotland.
The Manchester City star set up first-half targets for Thomas Vermaelen Romelu Lukaku along with Toby Alderweireld since the traffic punished errors by Steve Clarke’s aspect in their European Qualifier in Hampden on Monday night.
The curled with consummate ease from the 82nd minute at a fourth to round off the scoring and Celtic’s attacking midfielder Christie was amazed by De Bruyne, who has also begun his season after struggling last term.
“He is a class act,” Christie said. “All these are the kind of players whom I aspire to. He’s in a similar situation to me. The places the way he and he selects hurts teams and his finishing too.
“The ball in for their next goal was terrifying and his end to its fourth is fairly impressive too.
“It’s excellent for me. I need to test myself against the best teams in the world so it’s a learning experience for me so hopefully I understand from it and move on.”
The conquer was the fourth from six at Group I which leaves them in fifth position of Scotland , above minnows San Marino who are bottom and without a point after losing 2-1 at home to Russia on Friday night.
Clarke’s side have four games remaining, Russia away and San Marino at home per month, before Cyprus off and Kazakhstan in Hampden in November. Christie insists he is still convinced of Scotland qualifying for a championship for the first time since 1998.
He said:”Going into it (the campaign) we had the play-offs because of fall-back, we didn’t need to have to work with it but it seems like we’re going to have to if we are going to create it there.
“Obviously they had been two quite unsatisfactory outcomes but after that, we still feel close as a group. We’ve taken more of their manager’s thoughts on board. I believe there are a few advantages we can take from that although I know that it sounds daft getting beat at 4-0 in the home.
“It is the little things that cost you at this level in soccer, particularly against a team like Belgium. They scored in their. It is hard to plagiarize as well as the quality they have when they go ahead is exceptional.
“That’s the level we’re attempting to reach. We’ve got four games left in the team to finish as large as we could and take that in the play-off.”
