Roger Federer suffers his fastest defeat in 16 years at the Cincinnati Masters

(CNN) — Roger Federer has endured his quickest defeat in 16 years after crashing out of the Cincinnati Masters Thursday.
Even the 20-time grand slam champion was roundly beaten 6-3 6-4 by Russian qualifier Andrey Rublev in just 62 minutes.
Federer, who had won this event seven times before, was confronting his 21-year-old competition for the very first time along with also the Swiss star said he’d been impressed by the strength of the Russian’s game.
“He was super clean. Defense, offense, functioning nicely,” Federer said of his opponent after the game.
“did not give anything. He had been. It was tough for me, but an outstanding match by him.”

Federer eyes US Open
Regardless of the loss, Federer said he had been happy to have come through the Cincinnati Masters injury free and has already turned his attention to the US Open later this month.
The world No. 3 is seeking to clinch his sixth title at Flushing Meadows, his first since 2008.
“I worked really hard coming to Cincinnati and at that little season we’d since Wimbledon, so that I could maybe also utilize a few days off,” the 38-year-old added.
“I’m going to train, do exactly what I need to do to the US Open and that is it. It’s fairly easy, but I have got to work hard.”

‘Most psychological win’
Meanwhile, Rublev will be seeking to build in an impressive breakthrough year that has now seen him conquer two top-five gamers — another being planet No. 4 Dominic Thiem.
The world. No 70 was clearly emotional after beating Federer and can now anticipate some quarterfinal match with fellow Russian Daniil Medvedev.
“It is the largest and most emotional win,” said Rublev, before turning his focus to praising Federer.
“I can’t envision daily how much pressure you have. I mean, to understand that you are Roger and everyone is watching you and you want to prove it each and every single day, and he’s doing so, I do not know for how many decades. I meanthis is something, I don’t know, unreal.”

Murray out of US Open
Meanwhile, he three-time grand slam champion Andy Murray confirmed he will not be taking part at this year’s US Open at the doubles as he continues his return from hip surgery.
The 32-year-old had previously ruled himself from playing the singles at Flushing Meadows but has confirmed he’ll miss the competition altogether.
“I’m not going to play doubles at the US Open. My goal is to get back playing at the level that I wish to about the singles court, and I have decided I want to focus all of my energies on this right today,” Murray told BBC Sport.
